The curator/organizer of Heterotopia is seeking a Marfa-based team to provide operational support for the exhibition. There are two paid positions, and of course, volunteers are always welcome.


AVAILABLE PAID POSITIONS


EXHIBITION ASSISTANT

Reports to: Curator/Organizer

Status: Temporary Contract

Schedule: Variable, events/installation evenings and weekends

Start Date: September 23, 2013     End Date: November 9, 2013

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide operational support to the preparation and staging of Heterotopia exhibition.
  • Manages shipping, delivery, receiving, and return process of featured artwork, including unpacking and re-packaging of artwork.
  • Responsible for preparing display venues, installing, and de-installing artwork
  • Responsible for opening/closing independent exhibition venues and providing gallery supervision
  • Responsible for monitoring exhibitions and maintaining professional appearance of galleries and displayed artwork at all venues
  • File weekly reports on attendance and artwork condition to curator/organizer
  • Other duties as needed and directed by the curator/organizer.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrated knowledge of specialist fine art handling with at least 1 year’s experience as arts preparator or similar position in a museum, gallery, or other arts organization
  • Demonstrated knowledge of museum display techniques as well as basic carpentry skills
  • Must own a computer, Windows or Mac based, and be familiar with MS Office and Google Docs
  • Excellent organizational skills with keen attention to detail and capacity to effectively manage multiple tasks and deadlines
  • Must work independently, with minimum on-site supervision; and ability to identify problems and resolve them quickly with diplomacy, integrity, and tact
  • Be able to interface effectively with people of diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills 
  • Must be able to work a variable schedule, including days, evenings, and weekends
  • Must be a valid licensed driver with a clean driving record and a reliable vehicle
  • Must have an active mobile phone
  • Must be able to lift at least 25lbs


SALARY RANGE

Salary commensurate with experience, qualifications, and availability.

  • Provide operational support to the preparation and staging of Heterotopia exhibition
  • Assist Exhibition Assistant with unpacking/re-packaging and installing/de-installing artwork
  • Assist Exhibitions Assistant with opening and closing designated exhibition venues
  • Monitor exhibitions and maintain professional appearance of galleries and displayed artwork at assigned venue
  • Assist Exhibitions Assistant with set-up/break-down of public programming and related events
  • Other duties as needed and directed by the curator/organizer.
